Using Pic Link Format to Link to Content Categories Not Articles

The Pic Link website template has a neat feature which produces a number of full sized images which link to the associated content.

Well. a client, in addition to other things wanted to link these to content categories instead. Here is an edited version of my instructions to them to achieve that and other related things

Note: Most pages on the SmartSpace back end have links to help files. Once you click on a help link, you can navigate to other help files within the little help file window if you need to

1. Create the Required Content Categories

Do this at Content Manager > Manage Content Categories > Create New Category

  1. Create a Category for each of the departments you intend to include in your website
    • Ticking the "allow replies" field will allow registered users make comment on the content of a story or article in that category
    • There is also an overarching selection for replies which must be ticked to allow indivudal categories to work as well - find in Content Preferences
    • We can also use the Description if you wish, when formatting the landing page which lists the stories in the category - we can discuss
    • Select the style of category archive view you would like
    • Take note of the id of each category as you create them
  2. I will also add very soon a image selection you can make which appears as a default when going to the archive page - it is there but not activated yet - i need to do a little tidying up - now done!
  3. You should also create a category which is called something like "front page redirects" although the title is not important
    • This category will be the one you use to place the "pic links" on the front page - although it will not contain any real content - just redirects
    • Ensure that this category is ordered by order number (not modified date)
    • Later, you will create four articles in this category which will contain the pic link image plus contain the web address of the content category you are linking to
    • Each article will have text placed in it something like http://www.mywebsite.com.au/infopage/archive/160 where 160 (or whatever) is the Category Id
  4. By doing it this way, you should seldom have to change these links as it will always go to the latest information in the selected category

2. Create The Main Menu Links

This link will help you with the detail - it is available on the page itself as a help file
Read More on Creating Main Menu Links

  1. Follow the instructions on creating the required number of links
  2. At a minimum, each of your departments(categories) should be listed as a menu item - you may want other links as well
  3. For each item, select Content - User Created Category as the auto link and insert the matching id for that category into the Category ID field
  4. If you want to return a sub menu, simply insert a number into the Records Returned field.
  5. This will automatically return the latest articles created and published to whatever number you want (up to 20)

3. Create The Pic Link Redirect Content

Going to the content management area, navigate to the previously created front page redirects category

  1. Using the Create New Post link you will create four posts each with the aforementioned link to the desired category placed as text in the "Text" area
  2. You may need to click the "Source" button in the formatting tools to check that the link is placed immediately after the <p> tag (no spaces)
  3. "Publish" each in turn
  4. Make sure you insert a Display Order  to get the right order of appearance in the Pic Link panels, later
  5. The Title of the article will be the title of the Pic Link panel - do not insert a Page Name
  6. When viewing all the articles listed in the category, they should have a status of "(Another Link)" to indicate it is a redirected page
  7. After creating the articles, click on the Add/Manage Pictures or the Add/Upload Pictures link
  8. Here you will upload or add previously created images as the Pic Link image
  9. Insert an order number of 1 to ensure it appears as a Pic Link(refer to template manual for pic size)

4. Configure The Pic Link Content Link Panels

Navigate to Content Manager > Website Templates > Link Panels > Configure Link Panels

  1. Configure the Pic Link panels
    • Untick the Default  checkbox
    • Use the Content - User Created Category as the Auto Selection
    • Insert the relevant matching Category Id into the Category Id field
  2. We are using just the one Pic Link panel to generate the four panel images
    • The second pic link box is not being used but could be to generate a second row or pic links or even other panels(as previously discussed - there are some restrictions on this) - if you want
  3. Click next to save the changes
  4. Different selections can be made in other panels later
